Public space of Parcel A
Baía de Luanda, Angola 2013
The intervention area is constituted by a landfill between the new Luanda’s Bay coastal road (Av. 4 de Fevereiro in front of Praça 17 de Setembro) and the new linear park.
The intervention is part of the requalification spaces called Luanda’s Bay Park.
It became imperative that the integration of the new spaces created over the sea could be read continuously with the remaining margin of the bay, imposing a cohesive image and a standardizing language. Despite all of this, the intervention at an urbanistic level is completely different from the park’s urbanistic intervention: a dense construction area with high buildings will impose an unparalleled range over the Av. 4 de Fevereiro. In this way the integration of the Parcel A outdoor spaces in Luanda’s Waterfront is fundamental to enlarge the outside spaces of the built mass. So, keeping a cohesive connection of the Parcel A intervention with the remaining intervention in the Bay it’s possible to achieve a visual enhancement of the Parcel A public spaces. The physical limit of the intervention will be the sea and the visual limit will be the “Chicala” more than 2Km away.
The main points of the intervention:
- building of a very versatile and resistant space, capable of receiving a big number of people simultaneously;
- creating as many outdoor green spaces as possible, using mainly big trees but also some grass areas for informal leisure;
- creating an autonomous space in terms of the design of the outdoor spaces, although it will be perfectly integrated in the Luanda’s Bay wider intervention, taking advantage of this integration to enlarge the space available for the users of the parcel.
