HOUSE IN RUA DA ARRIAGA

Lisboa, Portugal 2022

The project envisions the organization of the garden through the reconfiguration of hardscape and green areas, transforming it into an extension of the house itself.
From the entrance to the property, located at the highest elevation, one reaches a platform that directs pedestrians toward the house entrance and a path surrounding the garden, while vehicles are guided towards the garage. These pedestrian and vehicular circulation areas will be paved in stone, with open joints or mortared joints respectively, forming a pavement stereotomy that also incorporates planting beds for preserved and newly introduced trees.
The garden on the southern side, more private in character, unfolds across three platforms at different levels, connected by a path of spaced stone slabs set directly on the ground, with joints sown with groundcover herbaceous plants. On the uppermost platform, the proposed lawn functions as a sun terrace. The existing steps and retaining walls between this level and the pool are preserved, both for their design and material quality and to ensure the protection of the trees and shrubs to be maintained.
On the intermediate platform, the existing pool is fully restored, with part of its original stone paving recovered and preserved. A new lawn and herbaceous planting areas are introduced. Framing borders planted with trees, shrubs, and groundcovers are also incorporated in this area. From here, one accesses the lowest platform, designed as a shaded garden planted with fruit trees.
