MACAM (MUSEUM+HOTEL)

Junqueira, Lisboa, Portugal 2018-2020

The project aims to provide the Museum-Hotel with an outdoor space that simultaneously functions as an extension of the exhibition area, a leisure zone for guests and visitors, and a connecting element between the existing and proposed buildings.
The design is based on a green matrix, a large lawn bordered by shrub masses and punctuated by a few trees, upon which the connecting pathways between the Hotel, Museum, and Café/Restaurant are laid out. These pathways are articulated through a succession of parallel stone lines that informally define the boundaries of a pavement made of smaller stone elements.
These lines also establish a formal connection among the various features of the garden – the small 18th-century oval pond, the proposed grand staircase, the new orthogonal reflecting pool, the display of pieces from the Museum’s collection, and the outdoor terrace area.
